Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, born within Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise at the age of a small child. Her aunt worked the night shift as a nurse so she could follow her passion for literature and theatre throughout the day. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay realized through the example of her mother that art can be an instrument for social activism. DuVernay grew up with an aunt who was well-informed and taught her how to use the arts as a way of expression. Even though DuVernay spent her childhood in Compton and with her extended family, she always spent summers in Lowndes County Alabama where her dad's family was a part of the same for several generations. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights movement's historic march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma led her later on to write a movie about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. She enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English as well as African American Studies. While she was an undergraduate student DuVernay became interested in producing to the broadcast media. DuVernay began as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned an assignment to watch the house and examining the rubbish of one jurors. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism, and she decided to go into the public relations business. DuVernay was hired for her first gig as a PR professional in the small studio that she worked in after her graduation. In 1999, she launched her own firm of public relations, called The DuVernay Agency. In addition to PR her agency launched a number of social media and lifestyle networks, including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
