Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972 at Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. Her aunt worked the evening shift as a nurse, so she could pursue her love for literature and theatre throughout the day. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art can be used to promote activism. In the same way, her mother was well-educated and encouraged how to express herself through the art of. Although DuVernay grew up in Compton with her family she was a summer resident living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. Her father, who was DuVernay's dad, reminisced historic civil rights march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would make use of the summers she spent there to inspire her upcoming film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with diplomas in English and African American studies. While she was still in school, DuVernay started to become interested in producing for television journalism. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was recalled having duty of looking after the house and examining the rubbish of one jurors. She was disappointed by the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the public relations industry. DuVernay was hired right after college, as a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999.
